German Alexander Zverev confirmed that his compatriot Dominik Fils could drop out of the ATP Top 10 after a mixed season. Recent results have not been enough to offset the accumulated loss of ranking points.
Dominik Fils, the young German rising star on the ATP Tour, is going through a tough period at the end of the 2026 season. After a promising 2025 campaign, the 24-year-old has struggled to live up to expectations this year. His performances in major tournaments have been inconsistent, preventing him from stabilizing his ranking in the world’s top 20. Early exits in Grand Slams and Masters 1000 events have taken a toll, reducing his chances of maintaining his place among the elite of men’s tennis.
According to current ATP rankings projections, Dominik Fils could drop out of the Top 10 as early as next week. This situation is largely due to the loss of points accumulated during tournaments from the same period last year. Indeed, ATP Tour events change each year, and points earned twelve months ago gradually fade if players fail to defend their results. Fils, who broke into the Top 10 in March 2026, now sees his ranking threatened by more consistent opponents.
His compatriot Alexander Zverev, ranked world No. 6, commented on the situation during a press conference ahead of the Shanghai tournament. Asked about Fils’ future, Zverev acknowledged that his young compatriot’s recent performances were not enough to offset his point losses. "Dominik has talent, but he needs to regain consistency to stay in the Top 10," he said. Zverev, who has experienced ups and downs in his own career, stressed the importance of consistency in modern tennis.
To avoid dropping out of the Top 10, Dominik Fils must perform well in the final two major tournaments of the season: the Paris-Bercy Masters and the ATP Finals. These events offer valuable points that could help him secure his position. However, competition is fierce, and every match now counts for him. Observers are questioning his ability to bounce back after such an inconsistent year.
If Dominik Fils were to leave the Top 10, it would mark a turning point in his career. The young German will then need to reinvent himself to regain the level that allowed him to break into the world’s elite. The coming months will be crucial for his future in professional tennis, as expectations surrounding his potential remain high.
