João Fonseca calls time on his 2026 ATP season
Brazilian João Fonseca, ranked world No. 29, has decided to end his 2026 ATP season. The announcement follows a year marked by inconsistent results and performances below expectations for the young Brazilian player.
A mixed season
Fonseca, who finished the 2025 season ranked 35th, began 2026 with ambitions to confirm his progress. However, despite occasional flashes of quality, the results failed to meet the high hopes placed in him. The Brazilian struggled to string together wins in major tournaments, suffering early exits in several competitions.
A lack of consistency in big moments
Inconsistency was Fonseca’s main weakness this season. Whether in Grand Slam events or Masters 1000 tournaments, the Brazilian failed to advance past the decisive rounds. His losses to lower-ranked opponents often came as a surprise, revealing gaps in his ability to handle high-pressure matches.
A carefully considered decision
In a statement, Fonseca explained that he had made this decision to focus on his physical and mental preparation for the 2027 season. "This year has been tough, but it has taught me a lot. I now need to rebuild myself to come back stronger," he said. His team confirmed that the Brazilian will not participate in any tournaments for the rest of the year.
A future to rebuild
With his ranking stagnating around the 30th position, Fonseca must now work hard to regain the level needed to compete with the best. His next goal will be to qualify for Grand Slam tournaments in 2027, a challenging task without significant improvement in his performances.
Brazil looking for new talent
Fonseca had been Brazil’s main hope on the ATP Tour. His early exit from the season leaves the country without a major representative in upcoming tournaments. Local young talents will now need to step up to carry Brazil’s colors on the international stage.
